Case Analysis

This case analysis was a final project for a class which allowed me to synthesize many of the things that I had learned about business organizations into one coherent analysis of a real case.

Biola Startup Competition

I was a finalist in Biola's first annual startup competition. This was nearly a year long process in which I worked with experienced professionals, learned about setting up a business, and traveled to Morocco, all while learning a ton about what it means to be involved in the startup world.

Adaptability

Excellence, not average, is my measure. Taking something from below average to slightly above average takes a great deal of effort and in my opinion is not as rewarding. Transforming something strong into something superb takes just as much effort but is much more thrilling. Strengths, whether mine or someone else's, fascinate me. Like a diver after pearls, I search them out, watching for the telltale signs of a strength. A glimpse of untutored excellence, rapid learning, a skill mastered without recourse to steps -- all these are clues that a strength may be in play. And having found a strength, I feel compelled to nurture it, refine it, and stretch it toward excellence. I polish the pearl until it shines. This natural sorting of strengths means that others see me as discriminating. I choose to spend time with people who appreciate my particular strengths. Likewise, I are attracted to others who seem to have found and cultivated their own strengths. I tend to avoid those who want to fix me and make you well rounded. I don't want to spend my life bemoaning what I lack. Rather, I want to capitalize on the gifts with which I am blessed. It's more fun. It's more productive. And, counter intuitively, it is more demanding. Link to article

I live in the moment. I don't see the future as a fixed destination. Instead, I see it as a place that you create out of the choices that I make right now. And so I discover my future one choice at a time. This doesn't mean that I don't have plans. I do. But this theme of Adaptability does enable me to respond willingly to the demands of the moment even if they pull me away from my plans. Unlike some, I don't resent sudden requests or unforeseen detours. I expect them. They are inevitable. Indeed, on some level I actually look forward to them. I am, at heart, a very flexible person who can stay productive when the demands of work are pulling me in many different directions at once. Link to article

I am inquisitive. I collect things. I might collect information -- words, facts, books, and quotations -- or I might collect tangible objects such as butterflies, baseball cards,  stamps, or sepia photographs. Whatever I collect, I collect it because it interests me. And mine is the kind of mind that finds so many things interesting. The world is exciting precisely because of its infinite variety and complexity. If I read a great deal, it is not necessarily to refine my theories but, rather, to add more information to my archives. I like to travel, because each new location offers novel artifacts and facts. These can be acquired and then stored away. Why are they worth storing? At the time of storing it is often hard to say exactly when or why I might need them, but who knows when they might become useful? With all those possible uses in mind, I really don't feel comfortable throwing most things away. So I keep acquiring and compiling and filing stuff away. It's interesting. It keeps my mind fresh. And perhaps one day some of it will prove valuable. Link to article

Ideation

Maximizer

Input

I am fascinated by ideas. What is an idea? An idea is a concept, the best explanation of the most events. I  am delighted when I discover beneath the complex surface an elegantly simple concept to explain why things are the way they are. An idea is a connection. Mine is the kind of mind that is always looking for connections, and so I am intrigued when seemingly disparate phenomena can be linked by an obscure connection. An idea is a new perspective on familiar challenges. I revel in taking the world we all know and turning it around so we can view it from a strange but strangely enlightening angle. I love all these ideas because they are profound, because they are novel, because they are clarifying, because they are contrary, because they are bizarre. For all these reasons you derive a jolt of energy whenever a new idea occurs to me. Others may label me creative or original or conceptual or even smart. Perhaps I am all of these. Who can be sure? What I am sure of is that ideas are thrilling. And on most days this is enough. Link to article

I like to think. I like mental activity. I like exercising the "muscles" of my brain, stretching them in multiple directions. This need for mental activity may be focused; for example, I may be trying to solve a problem or develop an idea or understand another person's feelings. The exact focus will depend on my other strengths. On the other hand, this mental activity may very well lack focus. The theme of Intellection does not dictate what I am thinking about; it simply describes that I like to think. I am the kind of person who enjoys my time alone because it is my time for musing and reflection. I am introspective. In a sense I am my own best companion, as I pose myself questions and try out answers on myself to see how they sound. This introspection may lead me to a slight sense of discontent as I compare what I am actually doing with all the thoughts and ideas that my mind conceives. Or this introspection may tend toward more pragmatic matters such as the events of the day or a conversation that I plan to have later. Wherever it leads me, this mental hum is one of the constants of my life. Link to article
